Google Apps at USF is here!

After an extensive evaluation headed by Student Government, the University of South Florida and Google have entered a partnership to bring Google Apps to all USF students. Google Apps is an exciting new system that will provide us with email, as well as a suite of other Google products that will enable USF students to better communicate, share, and collaborate.
To sign up, visit http://mail.usf.edu
Don’t worry, your email address won’t change, and you won’t lose your old messages! The nice thing about Google Apps is that everyone will be able to keep the same email address and we’ll migrate the mail from your existing email account to Google Apps. This means that you can search and access all mail in one central location.
Here are some of the other key benefits:
- 6 Gigabytes of email storage — No more worries about having to delete mail.
- Instant messaging & voice calls — Connect instantly with others when you have a question.
- Google Calendar — Schedule meetings, book rooms, create events, and share calendars with others.
- Docs and Spreadsheets — Create and collaborate in real-time with others at your location, and across the globe.
- Start Page — Start off the day on the right foot by adding your favorite gadgets to your personalized start page.
- Access your information anywhere, anytime — All content is available online. You can also access your email with a mobile device .
- Reliability — Google Apps products are built with speed and reliability in mind.
You can use these URLs to access the service once you’ve registered:

- Calendar - http://calendar.mail.usf.edu

I hope you will start sharing experiences and problems during integration and using it in daily studentlifes.
Our university is running a lot of Novell ….. and I am in a team to evaluate and propose new ideas. Google Apps is yet proposed but lacking experiences etc. from other international universities.

Novell… I shudder to think about it.

You must make changes to your email client (outlook or thunderbird) if you receive mail from an email client program. In english if you use a program to get your USF email instead of logging into the web site you will have to change setting in the program to keep it working. USF Outlook 2007 Mail settings

Do not forget to enable POP in the new google email page!!!!!!!!!!1

I decided to sign up for the Google Apps; it all sounded good. NOWHERE did it say it would take 48-72 hours to transfer my e-mail (until after I submitted it) … That would have influenced my decision about WHEN I made the change. I am doing 2 research projects and have 15 different addresses that I do not have access to right now. NOT HAPPY! Let others know they will not have access to their e-mail during transfer…..
March 6th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
the links aren’t working for me.
March 6th, 2008 at 7:10 pm
where can you access blackboard from google apps? It would be stupid if you now have to log into two different places instead of one.
March 7th, 2008 at 12:35 am
Why are my contacts not transferring automatically to the Google USF account? How can I transfer them all over without having to Re-Enter every single one… that would be a tedious process…
March 8th, 2008 at 1:17 pm
Will the email addresses now be permanent? I.e., will new graduates now be able to keep their university address (…a service many other universities provide…maybe the alumni association could pick up the cost, if there is one?)? Or will this account be deleted/become inaccessible like the old one once I’m no longer enrolled?
March 9th, 2008 at 1:27 pm
is there an imap settings, I rather use imap vs pop3
March 9th, 2008 at 10:22 pm
Miss Dixon: Unfortunately, there;s no way for us to add them automatically, but all of your contacts from WebMail are extracted and attached to the welcome message you recieved when you signed up for Google Apps at USF.
Paul: You can keep the account after you graduate. The only caveat is that non-students will receive text-based ads in the Gmail interface.
Andrew: The settings that Matthew included will work for IMAP, with the following exceptions:
Incoming Server: imap.gmail.com
Port: 993
March 12th, 2008 at 7:12 am
I have lost all my contacts, permanently. How can you I get them back?
March 14th, 2008 at 9:43 pm
I can’t log on. I used the same name and password yet they won’t work. It keeps telling me that no one by that name is a member of gmail???????????????????
Not happy.
Roberta, you can go back to your webmail. It is still there. You can still use it, but your new incoming mail will not be there. Use an alternative for your project.
March 16th, 2008 at 8:50 pm
You would have to re-register your email in order to be able to use G-Mail.
I enabled POP3, IMAP, and whatever else to receive e-mails on my BlackBerry, but to no success. I decided to just have it forwarded.
March 17th, 2008 at 4:22 pm
I love Google Docs, but the @mail.usf.edu domain doesn’t apply to my primary university email; @health.usf.edu does. Will Google Docs be available for USF Health students soon?
March 17th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
I registered for Google Apps. 7 days ago and nothing. What’s wrong
March 18th, 2008 at 8:01 pm
The fine print on Google’s TOS says they can reproduce and use anything sent via Google. That sounds like danger to those of us concerned with copyright ownership. Have you checked this out with any copyright lawyers or groups such as the National Writers’ Union? Please check this out fully if you don’t know the answer.

I been trying to set up Apple mail (IMAP) this last week and I can’t get it to work at all! Is there who got it to work?
April 1st, 2008 at 6:05 pm
Hi, I’d like to know how I can go back to the old version. I am unable to use Google at work due to the security risks involved and still need to be able to access my student email.
Thank you for your help!
April 1st, 2008 at 11:44 pm
Hey, How can I erase the new google account and get back to my old version?
Thanks!
April 15th, 2008 at 12:48 pm

this system sucks, i want my old one back. i hate this google system more than yahoo mail, and thats saying something…
April 22nd, 2008 at 2:48 am
yeah they aren’t responding, may be they got too many requests than they expected. But anyway all things are worth to try, ok all not but most of the time they are.
April 22nd, 2008 at 11:32 am
I can’t believe how idiotic this system is. It refuses to recognize the student and you have to sign into the program two or three times in order to get to your mail (if you can get into it without an error message coming through). I feel like the rest of the individuals on this page — I WANT MY ORIGINAL USF EMAIL BACK! I have been waiting for some information to come through my email account from different administrators and guess what –CAN’T FIND MY FREAKIN’ MAIL! This system has been nothing short of frustrating and confusing.
CHANGE IT BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
April 22nd, 2008 at 1:31 pm
i still don’t recieve any mail for five days after regestring, i missed alot of communication with my instructors, this is so horrible soooooo stupid so bad Dang it!!
April 27th, 2008 at 1:51 am
I think bringing google apps to usf is a stupid idea.
Yea, gmail is great and all but how are we going to train all the computer science kids if they dont get real-life server to work on.
you guys finally got the email all straight and then switch - i will never make the switch and i would not advise other to do so.
Keep WebMail @ USf not on some lame gmail server
May 7th, 2008 at 5:28 pm
I hate this new e-mail! I want my old one back! Why this switch?
May 12th, 2008 at 12:17 pm
Has anyone else experienced a HUGE AMT of spam when they transfer their new USF google mail to another email?
I.e. I forward my USF Gmail acct to my personal Gmail acct. The spam was overwhelming.
May 12th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
This e-mail does not work… how do i get it to work???
May 14th, 2008 at 7:16 am
This simply DOES NOT WORK! The web mail system, before, sucked and now THIS. This system is even worse.
I can’t get my f@#*ing mail.
May 14th, 2008 at 8:57 am
Is there a way NOT to be transferred to gmail compulsorily? This transfer is not a good idea and I most honestly hope it will be reconsidered. I do not want my account to be transferred, please!
May 14th, 2008 at 9:38 am
this is awful…i have not been able to access my email for a week now…worst idea ever, don’t
May 19th, 2008 at 11:04 am
The account is working for me.
May 22nd, 2008 at 8:45 am
This is stupid
May 22nd, 2008 at 2:18 pm
Yeah this is actually quite annoying. Will all my mails be transfer automatically, or will I have to forward everything to the google account?
May 23rd, 2008 at 10:50 am
i have change my webmail to google, how do i retrieve my mail and what is my email?
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:27 pm
This is so dumb! Did the budget cuts take away our email too… I don’t even know what my new email address is or how to get back to it! Ughh
May 23rd, 2008 at 6:35 pm
this is really frustrating. i am also unhappy with the new email system and i don’t seem to be the only one to say the least. sometimes simplicity is simply better. i am in mexico and am not receiving important emails after the switch. can we have the old system back!!!! please : )
May 26th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
This was the absolute worst decision the university could have made. What was the point? We pay constantly increasing tuition and fees and then have our university email taken away? I’m sorry, but what is the advantage of switching to google? I’m in the middle of my last semester, and now I don’t know if I can rely on the new system to deliver my very important graduation related emails. USF is showing no respect for its students with this switch.
May 27th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Students at many universities are requesting Google Apps be brought to their universities. One of my friends has been asking his university to do this for a couple of years. The pros to google apps is has more space therefore less emails will be rejected due to full mailboxes and we can keep this email even after we graduate.
Give it a chance. You’ll love it in a few months… Change can be good.
May 29th, 2008 at 4:25 am
I HATE GOOGLE!!!!I ALREADY HAVE A GOOGLE ACCOUNT WITH MY OTHER COLLEGE, THAT WAS THE REASON I STARTED USING MY YAHOO MAILBOX. WHY ARE THEY FORCING ME TO USE IT? IS THERE ANYWAY I CAN USE ANOTHER EMAIL SYSTEM?
May 29th, 2008 at 12:46 pm
I very strongly dislike this new “Google Aps” system. I find it annoying that I cannot move anything out of my inbox to new folders. Hate it.
May 30th, 2008 at 7:43 am
this new email is stupid. webmail was fine
May 30th, 2008 at 9:51 am
Hello Christina — use another email system by forwarding it to your yahoo account
Hello Tina– Archive, gets it out of your inbox and you have a permanent record of it, delete it if you do not want a record of it.
May 30th, 2008 at 10:01 am
I welcome google apps here at usf and think it was a smart move.
The webmail interface was horrible, space was very limited, and not to mention, it was very slow.
With Google apps, students get 6gb of email storage, they never have to figure out what emails to delete. They get the quick and
responsive interface of Gmail and all of the features like POP3,forwarding, and IMAP.
Not only does it offer email, it offers Google Docs, where students can publish their documents have other students edit it or view them IN REAL TIME right from a browser window, this is especially beneficial if the student does not have access to Microsoft Word at their current
location. Another benefit is Google Talk, where students can Instant Message another student just by using their usf.edu email.
All of these brings everyone closer to another, creating a streamlined network of students, teachers, and deans.
Personally, I use to forward my usf.edu email to my gmail account due to it’s quick and simple interface and large amounts of email storage. Now I do not have to.
As Susan mentioned above, this is a move in the right direction.
Thanks USF!

Tine - lookup “labels”, that’ll help you.

Tina, lookup “labels”, that will help you in organizing.

I am unable to convert my email to Google Apps. The signup system rejects my attempts and I am afraid the automatic transfer on June 1 will aslo fail.
I called helpdesk but they were unable to solve my problem.
How can this be fixed?

This is crazy. We can’t go back and forth with Blackboard! If we send an email through Blackboard communications does it get to the instructor and/or classmates? Can’t tell. Cannot connect to server either. What is the actual mail address???? I have to go to webmail, then the link to Google Apps is here and them that mail link. However, if I just enter it into my browser it says the page does not exist. This happens with the link also–takes multiple attempts. If and when I get to the page it takes three to four times for it to accept my login.
Is any of mine and other complaints ever going to be addressed??????
June 3rd, 2008 at 6:25 pm
I REALLY REALLY HATE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
IF SOMETHING IS NOT BROKE WHY TRY TO FIX IT!!!!!!
USF REALLY CAN SCREW THINGS UP, THEY HAVE BEEN A ROYAL PAIN IN MY BUTT FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS. I WILL BE SO GLAD TO GET OUT OF THIS HORRID PLACE
June 4th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
Thank God we finally switched from that lame Webmail service to Gmail. Now attachment limits are a lot larger, the email account can hold a much more (I mean, seriously, what were we supposed to do with 56k of space???? It’s like for those same people who still buy 52k flash drives) and the interface is a lot cleaner, not to mention faster. Can’t say no to that.
People who have trouble organizing their mail should read the instructions. Not automatically resort to calling the app stupid. The only thing that is stupid is the failure to actually open your eyes and read the instructions. Honestly, the app isn’t that hard to work.
Why is it that every time we take a step towards efficiency, someone has to complain?
Is progress really that painful?

I cannot get my incoming server to work on outlook. I keep getting an error with credentials whether using imap or pop. My outgoing is working perfect, but my in-coming will not retrieve anything. I have used the servers listed here and it will not allow me to access the imap incoming servers and keeps giving me the error message. Any ideas?
